This post is for Blog Action Day – find out what the day’s all about.
We’ll wait right here for you.
The writers here at Straight to the Bar have their own opinions on climate change (several are listed below). What’s yours?
John : Lately I’ve learned that climate change must be added to the list of things not appropriate to talk about in polite conversation- the others being religion and politics. That sad reality stems from the blurring of the lines that once separated science from religion (and to a lesser extent politics). In what must be the most ironic occurrence of the 21st century the separation of science from religion- ushered in with growing celerity by Darwin- has been reversed by environmental demagogues bent on advancing a dystopian phantasmagoria filled with endless paroxysms of despair and hand-wringing over dire changes should we refuse to act.
There are many good reasons to live a “green” lifestyle- but succumbing to chicken little warnings of a warming sky doesn’t rank among them. But, I would conclude by urging to you to do the research for yourself. No one person speaks with ultimate authority on any topic, whether they wear the white collar of a priest or a white lab coat. I implore you with the words once written by St. Augustine, “tolle lege.” [meaning “take up and read.”].
Max : I don’t know a whole lot pertaining to the specifics of greenhouse gases and global warming, but my opinion on climate change is that it’s admirable to try to fix the problem. However, the fact is that as long as we continue with this high-technology way of life, with gas-guzzling cars and other threats to the environment, any minor changes won’t be very beneficial unless there’s an extreme shift in the way we live.
Mich : With the caveat that I have not had the chance to review all the literature I wish to review on the subject, I am, for the time being, in the Lomborg camp: the subject is getting a disproportionate amount of attention, and there are other issues we can and should tackle first. See: http://www.tcsdaily.com/article.aspx?id=112806D
Scott : Growing up in Sydney, I’ve been surrounded by environmental discussions for as long as I can remember. Whether it’s water conservation, recycling or power generation – environmental topics are in the media. Somebody’s always talking about them.
A few years ago I became aware of the larger issues concerning Climate Change (or simply ‘Global Warming’, as it was known then); largely through the speeches of people such as Al Gore. I suspect I’m not the only one.
My own stance then : this is an urgent problem which must be addressed as soon as possible. It certainly isn’t the first global crisis we’ve faced, and it’s unlikely to be the last. However, our work on the issue of the ‘hole in the ozone layer‘ shows that it can – with a bit of effort – be done.
