Welcome to Straight to the Bar
If you’ve just joined us, welcome. Here you’ll find everything that grunts, groans and ticks in the world of strength training. In short, this site is the home of all things strength.
Incidentally, this site’s been helping people become fitter, healthier and stronger since January 2004. If you’ve just joined us, I highly recommend subscribing to the weekly Strength & Fitness Newsletter (part of the Strength Kit), which contains details of new posts on the site, freshly-minted video demonstrations & tutorials, details of upcoming Gymchats and a whole lot more.
And yes, it’s absolutely free.
To help get you started, here are a few of our most recent posts. And if you want to dive in to a particular area. check out the ‘Start Here‘ page above. Enjoy.
Fitness Reading/Listening For The Week : ‘The Mind Manual – Mental Fitness Tools for Everyone’ (by Dr Alex George)
It’s wonderful to see a book on this area – the ‘mental fitness‘ side of things. Whether you’re mentally in a good place right now (and would like things to stay that way), or things are a bit more of a challenge – this book is ideally placed to be able to help.
Powerful, detailed and well worth reading. Dive in.
Core One (OTC Hearing Aids)
This is certainly a rapidly-growing space – relatively low-cost hearing aids. The Core One is a pair of in-canal devices, with inbuilt noise reduction features. A companion smartphone app controls everything.
Outstanding Results in New Human Study (Dr Brad Stanfield)
Promising indeed.

Mentech Xe1 (Smartwatch)
It’s wonderful to see new entrants to the smartwatch space (competition always encourages new functionality and ever-lower prices). The Mentech Xe1 comes with the usual array of fitness- & health-tracking features, with a little AI coaching thrown in for good measure.
Flux Diets And Fat Loss (Ryan Humiston)
Very interesting approach.

Fitness Reading/Listening For The Week : ‘Changing Body Composition Through Diet and Exercise’ (by Michael Ormsbee for The Great Courses)
Changing Body Composition Through Diet and Exercise is a great overview of the basics (on both the nutrition and exercise fronts). If you’re just beginning your fitness journey (or about to), this is an excellent place to start.
niostem (Wearable To Reverse Hair Loss)
niostem is a wearable designed to stop – and gradually reverse – hair loss. And although I’m not exactly the ‘right’ person to test this out, I’m keen to hear from anyone who’s given it a run.
