Welcome to Straight to the Bar
If you’ve just joined us, welcome. Here you’ll find everything that grunts, groans and ticks in the world of strength training. In short, this site is the home of all things strength.
Incidentally, this site’s been helping people become fitter, healthier and stronger since January 2004. If you’ve just joined us, I highly recommend subscribing to the weekly Strength & Fitness Newsletter (part of the Strength Kit), which contains details of new posts on the site, freshly-minted video demonstrations & tutorials, details of upcoming Gymchats and a whole lot more.
And yes, it’s absolutely free.
To help get you started, here are a few of our most recent posts. And if you want to dive in to a particular area. check out the ‘Start Here‘ page above. Enjoy.

Fitness Reading For The Week : A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail (Written by Bill Bryson, Narrated by Rob McQuay)
A friend of mine was discussing his various hiking trips with me over the weekend, and I mentioned that I enjoyed a bit of bushwalking myself. Paired with a spot of outdoor training, of course.
After the conversation he noted Bill Bryson’s ‘Walk In The Woods’. I missed it the first time around, and am just about to dive in.
Looks great.
Kiko (Laser Height Measurer)
The Kiko is a laser height measurer for assessing (and recording – it’s paired with a smartphone app) your kids’ height. A companion smart scale completes the package.
Old School Bodybuilding vs Current Approaches (Will Tennyson)
Many, many changes.
(As for my own workouts, they’re a blend of the two : 1970s bodybuilding simplicity paired with the current understanding of nutrition.)
