Video for Gymchat 229 – How to Prepare for a Powerlifting Competition (Ben McLaughlin)
Written By : Scott Bird

Thanks again to everyone who watched and sent in questions for the discussion Gymchat 229 – How to Prepare for a Powerlifting Competition [with Powerlifter Ben McLaughlin and Personal Trainer Josh Hewett] – much appreciated. If you haven’t seen it yet (or simply want to go over a particular point again), here’s the entire video.

It was a great discussion. Josh and Ben discussed Ben’s training background and how he got started in Powerlifting, a basic definition of Powerlifting, RAW vs Geared meets, watching other meets before entering one, knowing the commands (and using them in training), holding the pause, the basic rules for lifts in meets, duration of meets and what to expect regarding actual time with the weights, Ben’s weight class and lifts in last meet, lifting strategy, training with experienced athletes, finding training partners, training on the ‘right‘ equipment, Ben’s own training approach, accessory equipment to take to the meet (shoes, knee sleeves etc), food for during the meet, a specific weight vs ‘whatever weight you are‘; and a whole lot more. If you’re ready to find out what Powerlifting’s all about, make sure you watch this one.
